Manchester United have reportedly begun exploring potential replacements for manager Erik ten Hag, conducting discreet discussions with four high-profile managerial candidates. This renewed assessment of Ten Hag’s position emerged amid United’s challenging start to the current campaign, with the team managing only one win from their last seven matches across all competitions—a narrow 2-1 victory over Brentford. Notably, former Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel, previously linked to the United role, accepted a position as the manager of England, removing him from the potential United shortlist if a managerial change were to occur.
United’s recent struggles have amplified speculation about Ten Hag’s tenure. Last Thursday’s 1-1 draw with Fenerbahçe only added to the growing pressure, leading to fresh reports from the Daily Mail suggesting that “secret talks” have indeed taken place. Reportedly, these discussions involved a four-man delegation, headed by Manchester United CEO Omar Berrada, who has reached out to former Barcelona manager Xavi. Sources indicate that United’s leadership spoke to the 44-year-old Spaniard just over a week ago, marking a second conversation in recent months as they evaluate their options for the future.
Xavi, who guided Barcelona to a La Liga title in the 2022-23 season, left the club earlier this year and remains without a managerial post. While his experience is limited to stints with Qatari club Al Sadd and Barcelona, his success with the latter and his familiarity with top-tier European competition make him a compelling candidate for Old Trafford.
In addition to Xavi, Brentford manager Thomas Frank is also believed to be on United’s radar. The Danish manager, admired for his strategic acumen and ability to develop talent, was reportedly among the club’s top options last summer. At that time, United executives were also evaluating Tuchel, as well as Ipswich Town’s Kieran McKenna and Fulham’s Marco Silva, indicating a broad search for Ten Hag’s potential successor.
Another candidate believed to be under consideration is Sporting Lisbon manager Ruben Amorim. The 39-year-old Portuguese coach has built a strong reputation, having previously been linked to managerial roles with Liverpool and West Ham United. Known for his tactical approach and ability to maximize resources, Amorim remains a prominent figure in Portugal and could present an attractive option for United’s leadership.
Completing the reported list of four potential replacements is Edin Terzic, the former Borussia Dortmund manager who departed the Bundesliga side in June. Terzic brought Dortmund to the Champions League final, though they ultimately fell to Real Madrid at Wembley. His impressive track record in Europe’s most competitive arenas is a key reason why Manchester United may view him as a viable option to lead the club through their next phase.
